AS SAM EXITED the nursery, he noticed a beige sedan parked in the shade of a large oak tree. The sun glinted off the windshield so that he could make out little more than a female silhouette behind the wheel. She ducked her head when she saw him staring. Then she started the engine and peeled out, showering gravel in her wake.

Sam wondered if the vehicle was the same one he’d seen the night before outside his townhome in Dallas. He had a dark hunch that Hazel Lamont was the driver. He hadn’t been sure she existed until now, but the snapshot he’d found in the garden shed had convinced him otherwise. There was something intriguing about that figure at the window. Something a little disturbing about the way she watched Jenna from behind the glass. Sam got out his phone and enlarged the image. The shadows hid her features, but he had the impression of malice. His imagination or gut instinct?

Sam pocketed his phone and strode to his car. He had no idea why Jenna Malloy’s roommate would be following him, but he intended to find out.

He left the farm and headed toward Belle Pointe. The road behind him remained clear until he reached the city limits and then he caught a glimpse of the beige sedan in his rearview mirror. He slowed and the vehicle quickly gained on him until the driver seemed to realize her mistake and backed off the gas. Sam drove through town, stopping for every yellow light to allow his pursuer time to catch up.

He pulled into the Belle Pointe Inn, removed his bag and checked in. Then he rode the elevator up to his third-floor room and after a quick perusal of his accommodations, he went over to the window and parted the curtains. The beige sedan was parked across the street facing the inn.

Sam strode out of the room and took the stairs two at a time down to the lobby. By the time he exited the building, the vehicle had disappeared.
